We were delighted to welcome Bishop Sonia Roulston, the new Regional Bishop of the Inland Episcopate back to the Parish in which she heard the Gospel and was formed in faith on Sunday 27th May, soon after her consecration as a bishop.
Trinity Sunday, 27th May 2018 was a great celebration for our Parish as we welcomed back our dear friend and previous member of the congregations Bishop Sonia. At her Episcopal Ordination on 10th May 2018, Bishop Sonia was appointed as Regional Bishop for the Inland Episcopate of the Newcastle Diocese of which the Parish of East Maitland is a part.
Bishop Sonia presided at the Mass at both 7.30 am and 9.30 am and taught on the Holy Trinity as revealed through Saint John’s Gospel of the story of Jesus and his encounter with the Pharisee, Nicodemus. Bishop Sonia related to us the working of the Holy Trinity in the faith life of Nicodemus whose heart, mind and soul was opened up as he sought to understand new life in Jesus through being reborn from above.
Bishop Sonia also brought with her a beautiful reproduction of the icon of the Holy Trinity by the 14th century Russian Orthodox iconographer, Rublev (pictured), which was placed in front of the altar. The icon very beautifully depicts the three members of the Holy Trinity in community with one another and with us.
Immediately after the Sung Mass Bishop Sonia met with the Parish Council to discuss our strategic planning initiatives for the next three-year cycle and we provided her with an overview of our ministry and community outreach programmes.
