Lesa

Lesa Scully is the Lead Musician for the Petrus Community, Weddings & Funerals

LesaI grew up in a faith filled and faith encouraging family. I attended a Baptist church for the first 26 years of my life and started worshipping regularly through my music at around the age of 8. My father was organist and I played euphonium, then trumpet then piano in church with him.

Throughout the journey of life, I landed at St Augustine’s Anglican church in Merewether in 2005. After growing up in the church with parents who were youth leaders, Sunday school teachers, organist, on the executive, flower roster, bible reading roster and prayer roster, I was determined to be Miss no-one in particular and just sit in a pew. Six months later, mid 2006, I became the interim organist. 12 years later, I am still there. My faith is something that continually and steadily grows within me. It is something that within what seems to be a post religious world, as a young woman and a single mum of two young boys, I find isolating at times. I am a strong believer in prayer. Without prayer, I shudder to imagine where and if my life would be.

Whilst being at St Augustine’s, I am very excited and willing to be as much as a part of this community here at St Peter’s as I possibly can. Providing the music for wedding and funeral services I take quite seriously and as an honour. To play a role in someone’s day as they mark the beginning of their life together is always exciting. To come together with a community that is grieving and celebrating I find a privilege. To be in this unique position, I am so grateful.

I come to St Peter’s community with a vast array of musical experience and skills.  I graduated from UoN holding a Bachelor of Music degree with a double performance degree on piano and trumpet as well as a Master of creative arts degree. I have over 20 years teaching experience, accompanying skills, conducting and performances under my hands.

I am currently holding the positions of Artistic director of the University of Newcastle’s Arts Orchestra, Musical Director and organist at St Augustine’s Merewether, private tutor and tutor at the Hunter School of the Performing Arts and Macquarie College. I both accompany and conduct choirs.  My performance history is quite varied and I have performed with many bands throughout Newcastle and have also performed and conducted here and in the USA.  I have performed solo recital work in Newcastle, the upper Hunter and Sydney.

To be able to combine my faith, music and my family, I recognise and celebrate that I am very fortunate to be in this unique position.
